Natural Concepts of Fasting
Fasting places the body in Ketosis. Ketosis is when the body burns fat in fat cells. Burning fat increases weight loss, protecting against obesity and disease associated with diabetes.
The concept of intermittent fasting is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. They should not go longer than 18 hours without consumption of food or drink.
Fasting has been associated with many health benefits that one's body will obtain if done correctly. These benefits include weight loss, improved blood sugar control, decreased inflammation, and enhanced heart health.
Therefore, it is not suggested that individuals take medicine associated with these various diseases unless closely monitored during fasting. If someone is currently taking Blood Pressure medications to lower their (BP), DO NOT take them, as this is also associated with diabetes. If someone is taking medication to help lower their blood sugar, DO NOT take them. Iron medications are not suggested during fasting, which can cause severe acid reflux and digestive discomfort.
Prolonged fasting can cause bloating or gas build-up in the stomach and intestinal tract. Often, gas can become so severe it traps itself within the walls of an individual's chest cavity, causing chest pains, NOT A HEART ATTACK.
Please refrain from ALL fried foods, carbohydrates (soda), high-acidic beverages, and cold water. These items will cause severe cramping.
It has been suggested to drink and eat lightly after fasting. Some items are room-temperature water and hot liquids with lemon, ginger, or honey, soups with broth (broth keeps the body hydrated), leafy greens and ample vegetables, raw fruits, fresh fruits, eggs, nuts, fish, poultry, and meats.
Spiritual Concept of Fasting
Fasting is a form of personal denial for a spiritual purpose, and one purpose is to express repentance and return to God.
There are three primary reasons to fast from a spiritual concept: Biblical Mandates, Spiritual Discipline, and a Closer Relationship with God.
These scriptures were given to help one overcome various concerns and needs while being transparent with God.
Matthew 6: 16-18 (Fasting for intimacy with God, not praises from Men)
Joel 2:12 (Return to God with Repentance)
Exodus 34:28 (Fasting for Direction)
Ezra 8: 21-23 (Fasting for Humility)
Isaiah 58:6 (Fasting from Freedom)
